We are very proud to announce that our daughter, Katie Noon, has been accepted as a People to People Student Ambassador for 2006. As a Student Ambassador, Katie will travel to Australia this summer for 20 days where she will meet with government officials, interact with other students her age, experience many educational activities and spend a couple of days with a host family.
For those of you who are not familiar with the People to People, this organization was founded in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. His goal was to promote world peace by having people from different cultures come together in peace and friendship. Organizations such as Sister Cities, Project HOPE and Pen Pals have spawned from this original program.
Students who are selected as Student Ambassadors are nominated by teachers or other civic leaders. They must then complete an application and interview process. Less than 1% of our nations high school students actually become Student Ambassadors. So, needless to say, we are very proud of Katie's accomplishments and we are excited for her that she will have this wonderful lifetime experience.
On the downside, the tuition for this trip is in excess of $6000.00. However, we decided that this is such a wonderful opportunity for Katie that we would figure out some way to do this. To that end, we will be doing quite a bit of fund-raising. Most of our events will be local (dinners, motorcycle poker run, dog obedience classes). At this time Katie is completing letters requesting donations toward her trip. We are also selling raffle tickets for a gorgeous afghan that Katie's Grandmom Everland crocheted for her. Tickets for this are $1.00 each and the drawing will be held on April 15th. Please let us know if you would like any tickets for this.
Raffle Tickets will be sent by US Mail (so include snail mail address)
